Diane Gilleland has done it again! I enjoyed her first two books, Kansashi in Bloom and Quilt Happiness, and am impressed with her latest endeavor - All Points Patchwork. In recent years, there has been a widespread reemergence of interest in handwork, especially English Paper Piecing (EPP), among quilters and sewists. For those of us who value the time spent sewing projects by hand, this book is a gold mine of instruction and inspiration! The author thoroughly covers the basics of EPP with well-written text and beautiful step-by-step photographs. Then she expands upon writing one’s own EPP patterns, drafting designs by hand or computer, and working with a variety of shapes beyond the classic EPP hexagon. There are sections on working with diamonds, triangles, jewels, tumblers, octagons, pentagons and even curved shapes such as Apple Core, Clamshell, and Dresden Plate.

All Points Patchwork is a great reference book for EPP regardless of one’s skill level. The author provides a detailed discussion of supplies, fabric selection, cutting patches, basting, sewing the patches together with various stitches, managing the work as it grows, finishing an EPP project, appliqueing EPP to projects, and problem solving. Being a visual learner, I especially appreciate the abundance of clear photos. The inspiring diversity of techniques and projects encourages experimentation.

The EPP projects included in All Points Patchwork are fun, attractive, and quite doable. EPP is used to construct or embellish a scarf, tea towel, table runner, wall hanging, child’s dress, stuffed animal, pillowcase, pincushion, potholder, eye mask, and toy ball, as well as various quilts, pillows, and covers for electronics (cell phone, tablets, and sewing machine). EPP is a simplified way to do patchwork because the paper templates do a lot of the work for you – and it is relaxing and portable while allowing you to be social while sewing. I highly recommend Diane Gilleland’s All Points Patchwork as a terrific resource for all things related to EPP. I can’t wait to add it to my quilt library!
