Fill'er Up Quilting Designs by Renae Haddadin is an amazing book of background quilting designs used to enhance pieced, appliquéd, and quilted focal patterns. The author discusses the importance of thread color and weight, thread saturation (denseness of quilting), and filler design complexity and scale versus the motif it highlights. She goes on to describe the logistics of machine quilting, stitching order, quilting choices, negative space, and breaking up large spaces. This is followed by detailed examples of a variety of filler designs such as the basic stipple, blackout, worms, swirls, three types of arcs, mussels, curls, random Greek key, pearls, fire, water, bark, flagstone, leaves, flowing hair, cross-hatching, argyle, repeated curves/lines on gridwork, feathers, and radiating lines. Wow! Every topic and example is illustrated using quilts with her stunning machine quilting. My first impression of the quilting in the book was that it so advanced I could admire it but never achieve that level of skill. After further perusal of the detailed and well-illustrated examples, I look forward to trying many of the background fillers! Oh, and you have to see the intricately machine quilted wedding dress she made for her daughter-in-law! This inspirational book is a worthwhile addition to any machine quilter's library.
