Hexagons, Diamonds, Triangles, and More by Kelly Ashton is a fascinating book! Hoping to tackle making a hexagon quilt, I was delighted to find the author’s well-written, well-illustrated, and easy-to-follow discussion of the various ways hexagons can be sub-divided into other shapes to make a wide variety of hexagon blocks. Sections include: supplies; cutting diagrams; how to sew Y-seams by machine; piecing diagrams for a wide variety of equilateral triangle, hexagon, diamond, and six-pointed star blocks; and quilted projects to bring the techniques all together. Templates are provided in the book; the author also references acrylic templates widely available for purchase.
I have discovered a new-found love of hand-piecing and greatly admire hexagon quilts. Believe it or not, I actually enjoy sewing Y-seams - once I learned how to make them correctly and easily. With the author’s help, I think anyone can master piecing angles other than the usual 90°. I hope to work my way through many of the blocks and construct a quilt made of adjoining hexagons, probably in neutral fabrics. I can’t wait to add Hexagons, Diamonds, Triangles, and More to my quilt library! If you suffer from “Y-seamaphobia”, this may be the perfect book for you as well!
