Techniques: piecing, applique, and general sewing

Currently, there are lots of quilting books on traditional patchwork and bag-making, with a few books about using Japanese fabrics. Japanese Quilting: Piece by Piece by Yoko Saito stands out as an amazing book with 29 stitched, quilted projects featuring Japanese taupes. The projects combine traditional patchwork, applique, candlewick, trapunto and rug-hooking in some of the most unusual bags, pouches, small boxes, pillows, seat cushions, aprons and wall hangings I have ever seen. The intricate designs, which mimic traditional patchwork, are simplified by the asymmetrical nature of their shapes. Although the neutral colors of Japanese taupes enhance the uniqueness of the creative designs, the projects would also work well in other neutral fabrics, batiks, and traditional fabric choices. The author’s artistic combinations of designs and materials are so imaginative! I may try the Hawaiian Quilt Tapestry or maybe the Bucket-Shaped Bag with Reverse Applique or… I’m sure every quilter would find something in Japanese Quilting: Piece by Piece to inspire them!
