Judy Woodworth is an amazing quilter, long arm quilter, designer, author, and instructor. After taking a machine quilting class from her, I was eager to review her new book The Art of Quilting. Expecting content on practicing and improving machine quilting skills, I was delighted to find additional content on the quilting design process itself. She discusses types of composition such as vertical, horizontal, diagonal, S-shaped, framed, spiral, grid block, circular, radiating, constellation, Z-shaped, and symmetrical.
In addition, basic art principles such as line, texture, value, shape, color, unity, variety, focal point, rhythm, motion, balance, space, depth, scale, and proportion are applied to designing a quilting design that honors the quilt. The author provides a whole section of machine quilting hints and techniques. The section on free-motion quilting combinations shows several quilt designs with step-by-step illustrations and photos - breaking down the steps makes the designs seem doable! The final section contains a selection of intricate quilting designs by the author for use by the reader. I recommend The Art of Quilting for any quilter wanting to explore answers to the question “How do I quilt this quilt?” as well as improving their machine quilting skills.
