This book really is a “best of” collection. Gathering Friends always have really nice books and I have been collecting them in recent years. I was really happy to see they decided to go back for their 10 year anniversary and reprint their most popular patterns from books they don’t print any longer.
My criteria for buying a book are that I have to like at least 3 projects to make it a worthwhile purchase. In this case, there isn’t a project in this book I don’t like! The Woodsong quilt is my favorite. I’m a sucker for bears and I haven’t met a bear paw block I don’t like! This one has a really great border too and will look great if made out of flannel.
I’m also planning on bringing up the Winter Star Tree skirt to my guild, the Blockheads, as a project for us to do. We often like to work on the same projects together so that we can compare how we do things and learn different techniques from each other. This project would be appropriately timed to get done in time for Christmas too!
By Request has a little something for both piecers and appliquers as well as projects that range from small to large. In one of the quilts where a panel had been used, you could either use a focal fabric or the authors gave an optional appliqué block to use.
I really liked that it is easy to replace fabrics in these quilts, especially since most of the fabric lines used in this book are no longer available. There is also a two page spread with general instructions, ranging from choosing colors to binding and all the steps in between. This is a very well rounded book with a nice variety of different projects that are all really cute!
