The authors of A Paper-Pieced Garden are both Dutch, long-time quilting friends, and share a love of bright colors, nature, and gardens. Maaike Bakker favors paper-piecing and Francoise Maarse enjoys appliqué and complex designs. When they decided to collaborate on a quilting book, it made sense to write a garden-themed book with all these elements. The result is an interesting, diverse collection of unique quilts with some shared characteristics. All the quilts have paper-pieced blocks incorporated into pieced backgrounds made mostly of simple squares and half-square triangles (common historically in Dutch quilts). Many also have some appliqué designs to add visual interest. Most of the designs are lovely flowers of some type, but the mushroom, pinecone, and squirrel are charming additions! What I like best is the mix-and-match aspect: there are a variety of coordinating paper-pieced blocks, applique designs, and quilting designs that can used interchangeably depending on the theme of the quilt. I think it would be fun to make a series of seasonal wall hangings, either using ones in the book or my own designs. A Paper-Pieced Garden will be a great addition to my quilting library … and yours!
