I must confess that I already own several books, pamphlets, and Internet downloads on transferring photos to fabric, and I have done it a couple of times. However, Blending Photos with Fabric 2 far surpasses anything I have read about the process. It is such an inspiring and motivating book for those who are interested in using photos in their quilting. This book covers photography, design, special effects with computer manipulation, preparation of fabric, and printing in very clear step by step instructions. For those of us who mostly think of printing photos of family and friends on our quilts, the author pushes us to view new possibilities! The book is full of actual projects with directions that have really gotten my creative juices flowing!
First, Mary Ellen Kranz gives tips for taking great photos. You don’t need to be limited by what you can find in a fabric store! Just whip out your camera and take a picture of what you want in your quilt. It could be the colors in the sunset or the tree bark in your front yard. I started looking at subject matter a little differently after reading this book. Just think of all the possibilities for making a landscape quilt!
Then Mary Ellen discusses the technical side of taking pictures. She covers things like scene modes and megapixels, but what I liked was the fun way to add special effects. After reading her tutorial, I tried spinning in a chair while taking a picture and it made a really cool design.
I liked Mary Ellen’s discussion of getting the photos into the computer and how to buy a printer. The discussion of dye based inks and pigment based inks is helpful and she gives really good directions for making your own fabric sheets and editing your photos. She has lots of pictures to show how the editing is done which is quite helpful for the computer impaired.
Mary Ellen includes 10 complete projects in this book. Each project has very clear step by step directions lots of pictures, so you can see exactly how she achieves all these wonderful designs. I can’t stress enough how easy she makes this! I think Blending Photos with Fabric 2 opens all sorts of creative doors for the quilt maker, and I can’t wait to get started!
