As a quilt designer and quilter, I just love quilt block books! Block Genius by Sue Voegtlin is a particularly fun one with its 201 pieced quilt blocks and no math charts. The author starts with clear instructions and illustrations for basic block units such as half-square triangles (HSTs), quarter-square triangles (QSTs), and Flying Geese - and techniques like stitch and flip, piecing with triangles, and partial seam construction. The sections are organized into groups of 2 x 2, 3 x 3, 4 x 4, and 6 x 6 blocks, each with cutting measurements for 6”, 9” and 12” finished blocks. Each block has a reference back to the unit and/or technique used and extra comments as needed.

The book’s layout is attractive with large illustrations and plenty of negative space to let the eye rest. The block samples are made in a variety of appealing fabrics. The last section discusses settings: straight, on-point, medallion, and asymmetrical. All these elements together offer the beginning or experienced quilter information and inspiration to personalize their own quilt project with individual or mix-and-match blocks. I am eager to add Block Genius to my quilt library and recommend it to quilters of all levels.
