I am such a lover of appliqué, especially wool work (appliqué), and this book is chock full of it! There isn't a project without this beautifully executed technique. A rare find these days are quilt books with a country theme using rich, dark, vibrant colors in projects that stretch from pillows to bed quilts. The templates for the appliqués are reasonable to make, however, geared more for the advanced appliquér unless you are using wool and that makes the technique much easier.
I love how wool feels in my hands when sewing it; how the needle sinks into the fabric and glides through the fibers, especially the wools that are thicker and cushier. The use of wool gives projects a rustic, homemade presence in the home. Having them all around me in my home makes me want to put a stew in the crockpot, start a roaring fire, and cuddle up with a good book and cup of coffee. Now, back to the book…
I appreciate the direction given for appliquéing with wool. It covers the gamut on treatment of wool with a number of tips. The illustrations are very understandable, which is helpful if a person hasn't appliquéd before. Also included is direction on how to manage wool borders, piping, needle-turn appliqué (if you want to use flat cotton), and more. The designs are lovely and I find the challenge of complicated and intricate piecing particularly appealing. This book is truly a find!
