While my tastes in quilting and fabric styles are eclectic, I am not usually drawn to making country style quilted projects for my personal use - until I reviewed Country Style Quilting by Lynnette Anderson. The main reasons are two-fold. First, the author’s fabric collections such as Time with Friends, Needle and Pins, and Winter Village (recent collections carried by Connecting Threads) share a similar color palette to Japanese taupes, with which I am currently enamored. Second, the quilts and smaller quilted projects combine simple patchwork, English Paper Piecing (EPP), applique, embroidery, and the occasional button with charming results. The effect is sophisticated folk art with a touch of whimsy.

Just as I was attracted to her fabrics, embroidery designs, and patchwork, the author’s company Lynnette Anderson Designs is popular with quilters and embroiders worldwide. A native of Dorset, England transplanted to Queensland, Australia, she has designed quilt and stitchery patterns, hand-crafted buttons, and fifteen fabric collections - and written nine books. When not at home or in her quilt studio and shop, she travels and lectures around the world.

Country Style Quilting offers fourteen lovely projects varying in size and skill level including quilts, throws, wall hangings, cushions, sewing accessories, and table linens. One of my favorites is the stunning heirloom Hexi Birds quilt on the cover which combines EPP, appliqué, and embroidery. Templates are provided in the book, as well as online resources to order pre-cut templates or download the template shapes to be copied on to fusible water-soluble appliqué template paper such as her favorite - Apliquick. I plan to start with a smaller project such as the charming embroidered pin cushion set on top of an Asian steamer basket to be used for a small sewing basket. Clever!
