Double Wedding Ring Quilts – Traditions Made Modern by Victoria Findlay Wolfe is just my kind of book! The author adapts and updates a beloved traditional block to create a dozen unusual and amazing new quilts. She shares insights into her personal journey as a quilter and her design process. I enjoyed reading how, for each quilt she designs, she carries over ideas from a previous quilt, set goals, add layers of design elements, and challenges herself to “push it further”.
Her Double Wedding Ring quilting journey started with a quilt called Double-Edged Love which won Best of Show at the first QuiltCon in 2013. From there other quilts evolved - inspired by life memories, inherited hand-made treasures, family photos, and unused orphan blocks. In addition to the unique quilts, most of which have full-size patterns, the author provides basic instructions for constructing Double Wedding Ring blocks, Made-Fabric, slashing blocks, and paper-piecing. The Made-Fabric is a technique introduced in Ms. Wolfe’s first book, 15 Minutes of Play – Improvisational Quilts. Scraps of fabric are sewn together to make a new pieced fabric to be incorporated in a quilt in diverse ways. What a clever, scrappy way to use up leftover fabrics!
I am eager to try my hand using her techniques and design process. First, I want to start with a fun quilt called Big Lights, Big City which combines elements of the Double Wedding Ring and New York Beauty blocks into an exciting queen-size quilt. I think most quilters will find Double Wedding Ring Quilts – Traditions Made Modern to be an inspiring quilt library addition!
