- Other Books You'll Love
I love art quilts. I love contemporary quilts. I love traditional designs. But I only seem to be able to follow existing patterns when what I want is to create something of my own. But I’m afraid. I don’t think I have the talent or I’m not creative enough. I’m full of ideas but don’t have the dedication to carry them through. These are all the thoughts going through my head when this book piqued my curiosity.
When I first saw this book, I immediately jumped to the conclusion that it was an art quilt book. Then I thought it was an inspiration book because there are no patterns. I kept mentally applying categories to it and then rejecting the category. We have one rule here at Connecting Threads about these book reviews…..you have to LOVE it or you can’t do the Staff Pick. I didn’t love it at first, but now I do. I mean I REALLY LOVE it! What it’s NOT is a book that you can quickly thumb through the featured projects and decide if it is for you. I’m still struggling to describe it so I’ll just stumble through it. It’s a class on how to get over your preconceived notions about design and creativity. It’s not that simple but it’s the best I can do to describe it.
Imagine taking a week long seminar where you do nothing but sketch ideas, learn solid basic design concepts from experts, play with color, and learn to critique your own work. That’s this book. Jean and Lorraine have compiled this book based on a design class for quilters that they have been teaching together since 1997.
It’s broken down into three goals: Design, Critique and Creativity. For every chapter, there is an exercise. Each of the 10 lessons has a design assignment and a creativity assignment. You work your way through the book, completing each section while gaining confidence in topics such as composition, color value, inspiration.
I know I’m still not describing the book well. If your creative side needs a little kick start, this is the book to help you. The term they use is “Supercharge your Creative Spirit”! I might even start a Quilt With Us group in our community if enough of you are interested in participating. Contact me on my blog page if you’re interested.
