A confession: I have been working on a crazy quilt wall hanging for over 20 years! There have been long lapses in time when it lives among my other UFOs. Occasionally I pick it up again, usually when I find a new crazy quilt book to inspire me. Fortunately, Foolproof Crazy Quilting is loaded with over 100 embroidery and embellishment stitches, beautiful illustrations, and helpful information about threads, ribbons, beads, buttons, and other embellishments. The author, Jennifer Clouston, shares her journey as a crazy quilter and the African and Indian influences on her handwork resulting from her upbringing in South Africa.
What I like best about the book is her amazing hexagon crazy quilt! She uses 25 of the crazy hexagon blocks as “stitch maps”, showing in great detail the stitches, type of thread or ribbon, and other embellishments she used – and where to find them in the book. In later chapters, each stitch is then well-described and illustrated with a photo and drawings. If you want to replicate the hexagon crazy quilt, she provides 9 hexagon patterns to piece and embellish.
My biggest stumbling block to completing my crazy quilt has been what to put in the center block. These hexagons may just be the ticket! Foolproof Crazy Quilting has inspired me to return to my long-term project … perhaps you will want to try your hand at crazy quilting as well. This book provides everything you need to know to get started!
