Quilters who enjoy handwork are blessed today with so many books on applique, embroidery, and embellishment. I get excited when I find one that stands out as uniquely creative. Tonye Phillips book, Hand-Appliqued Quilts, offers a fresh approach to applique. The author shares my love of polka dots, scrappy fabrics, whimsy, and doing handwork while listening to a good audible book or watching TV. She encourages working with simple shapes and designs in a free-form, "get-out-there-and-do-it" kind of applique. Hand-Appliqued Quilts has its roots in primitive, folk-art applique with its naïve feel; the author has updated the look with a colorful, cheerful, and quirky combination of fabrics. While I appreciate the precision and symmetry of a Baltimore Album block, I find the "wonkiness" of a more relaxed style more, well, relaxing to sew. The author provides detailed, illustrated instructions for quilt design and inspiration, applique, and quilt assembly, with patterns for 10 projects and numerous interesting template shapes. My favorite design is a repeated spiral. Hand-Appliqued Quilts will encourage beginners to try applique and sewers experienced with traditional applique to loosen up some!
