I became enamored with hexagon quilts this year and have visions of creating a large, scrappy pieced hexagon quilt in neutral fabrics. Hexagon Happenings by Carolyn Forster is an exciting addition to my quilt library because of its inspiring projects and its well-written and well-illustrated text. What makes this book stand out among similar books are the step-by-step instructions for drafting, cutting, and piecing hexagons, partial hexagons, and diamonds with and without templates. She does provide template patterns; pre-made acrylic templates to accompany the patterns in the book are available through the publisher. The sections on fabric selection, piecing by machine or by hand, quilting hexagons, and finishing and binding hexagon quilts are especially helpful.

In addition to the thorough hexagon basics, the author provides 15 quilted projects of varying sizes and levels of difficulty. Her templates create hexagons with a 4” side which is slightly larger than the most common 3” size. The larger hexagon size means projects finish quicker and, depending on fabric choices, may have a modern feel. The patterns also contain pressing directions which are important for assembling hexagons.

Two quilts I can’t wait to start are the Tumbling Stars quilt and Boxed Hexagons Quilt. Both combine diamond shapes to form stars, cubes, and hexagons and have a three dimensional aspect due color value placement and secondary patterns. I am eager to add Hexagon Happenings to my quilt library and recommend it to quilters of all levels.
