Jean Wells has done it again! She has always been a step ahead with her books and designs, but this time, inspired by the Gee’s Bend quilt exhibit, Jean takes a new turn, stretching her craft into art.
Anyone listening to me as I perused this book would hear me exclaim “oh, cool!” and “I love that!” and “And that one too!”. I love her non traditional landscape projects that are inspired from nature but have a unique contemporary feel when adapted to fabric.
While she gives you tips on techniques using traditional quilting tools, Jean mostly encourages you to throw out your rulers and rules. She has a chapter on journaling your ideas, but most of the book is about lessons in design and color, with tons of inspiring photos to get you going. While there are no real quilt patterns here, she does have a project for Off-the-Wall quilts. These are mini quilts mounted on stretched canvas for dimensional wall hangings that look great grouped together. I like the idea of trying out her techniques on small non-risky projects, then mounting them and grouping them.
