Essential Stitch Guide by Judith Baker Montano, truly a source of inspiration as its title says, combines the best of the author’s prior books – Elegant Stitches and Floral Stitches – into a concise stitch dictionary. This treasure trove of over 180 stitches and 70 combinations is wonderful resource for many types of needle work: embroidery, ribbon embroidery, bead embellishment, crazy-quilting, counted cross-stitch, needlepoint, punchneedle embroidery, and mixed media. The categorized stitches can be worked in thread, ribbon, and yarn. The spiral binding, which helps the book lay flat, and smaller format make it a handy resource to keep nearby while doing needlework.

In the first section, Getting Started with the Basics, the author provides helpful text and illustrations for fabric, needle, hoop or frame, and thread selection for a variety of needlework techniques. Especially helpful is the content on transferring designs, enlarging/reducing, washing, blocking, pressing, embellishment, and supply storage.

The next two large sections, Embroidery Stitches and Ribbon Embroidery Stitches, provide an extensive selection of stitch descriptions with step-by-step illustrations. There are numerous popular stitches and many interesting, uncommon ones.

The last sections definitely add to the value of the book: Advice for Left-Handers, Crazy-Quilt Combinations, and Free-Form Embroidery. When doing crazy-quilt handwork, easily accessible inspiration for stitch combinations for each new area enhances the needlework experience. The Free-From Embroidery section is a fascinating exploration of adding needlework to mixed media art quilts.

I am eager to add Essential Stitch Guide to my quilt library and plan to keep it handy while happily stitching away!
