Machine Quilting with Style by Christa Watson is an inspiring book for those of us quilters venturing into machine quilting our own quilt tops. The author provides loads of encouragement and helpful information about machine quilting on a domestic sewing machine. She reassures the reader that the quilting doesn’t have to be perfect and it doesn’t require a fancy sewing machine. General information includes discussions of the quilting workspace, practice hints, needle size, thread, batting, and pressing suggestions. In addition to the many quilting designs, twelve quilts with graphic appeal and a modern flair are provided for practicing the stitches.
I was first drawn to Machine Quilting with Style because it included “walking foot wonders” - designs that can be accomplished with a walking foot or a built-in even-feed foot. These easily approachable stitches include waves, square and circular spirals, decorative stitches, linear echoes, parallel, radiating, and shattered lines. The versatile free motion stitches include stipples, waves, loops, seaweed, boxes, triangle texture, pebbles, switchbacks, spirals, and strings of pearls. I am eager to try these stitches - and I like the quilts. The first quilt I want to make is Broken V made with shot cottons.
I recommend Machine Quilting with Style as a resource, especially for quilters, like myself, who are somewhat intimidated by machine quilting. This book will help us get started with a can-do attitude and expectation of success.
