William Morris (1834-1896) was a multi-talented architect who founded the Arts & Crafts Movement, designed furniture, textiles, tapestries, wallpaper, and carpet. His workshop, which focused on fine, hand-made craftsmanship, use of local materials and motifs from nature, was a reaction to the manufactured clutter of the Victorian home and the increasingly mechanized production of the industrial age. His lovely designs for home décor are still produced today and are the inspiration for several recent quilt fabric collections. Michelle Hill, in her second book called More William Morris Appliqué, continues to explore appliqué designs based on his work. She provides an interesting history of William Morris and his contemporaries, examples of his designs and exquisite appliqué projects inspired by specific designs. The projects in the book range in size and complexity from a journal cover to baby quilts, wall hangings, table runners and quilts. One quilt with a black background caught my fancy; it seemed modern even with the historically-inspired appliquéd designs. This beautifully illustrated book, a treasure of textile history and modern applications of his timeless designs, is a wonderful addition to a quilter's library.
