Quilting in Japan is known as patchwork. The author likes to combine little scraps of fabric into new, unexpected, modern interpretations of traditional blocks. She does this by experimenting with angles, proportions, and color. The 78 original motifs referred to in the title are mix & match blocks, each 3-1/2” when finished, divided into sections called Squares & Rectangles, Xs & Os, Diamonds & Triangles, and Stars & Polygons. My favorite project is the Confetti Purse, a briefcase-like bag, which is made with fabrics of similar color value except for tiny squares of a brighter fabric that look like scattered confetti. The instructions seem to be written for machine piecing but I would be inclined to hand-piece the many small pieces in the small blocks. Most of the 10 projects are unusual bags, clutches, and totes; the intriguing assortment of blocks would make a stunning sampler quilt!
