I am so excited to add Quilt Talk by Sam Hunter to my quilting library! The author’s love of words and fonts shows through in her informative text, helpful illustrations, and fun projects. She provides a font and the math to plan word placement: uppercase and lowercase letters; punctuation marks; numbers; spaces between letters, words, and lines; and accent marks for other languages. Also included are suggestions for fabric selection, the use of contrast, and changing the size of the letters. Her step-by-step explanations and images for paper-piecing the letters will enable even novices to have successful results.
There are several examples of quilts and quilted projects with words. One of my favorites has “Sesquipedalian” in large letters with long, multi-syllable words quilted into the background. Another clever quilt has “Life has its Ups and Downs” on the borders of a chevron quilt. There is a quilt with lovely flowers and Monet’s saying “I must have flowers, always, and always.”
Projects with patterns include a “Welcome Baby” quilt, a “Talk to Me!” wall hanging with blackboard fabric for messages, “Eat” place mats, an “Oh Scrap!” fabric scrap bucket, and a “@*\$+(#%!” contemporary quilt. There is even a famous Star Wars quote for Hans Solo fans! The instructions, letters and numbers, and project suggestions provide everything needed to personalize a quilt or incorporate a favorite saying into any quilted project. Like I said, I am eager to add Quilt Talk to my quilting library – and quilting skill repertoire!
