The craft of African quilting is a beautifully textured and vibrant art form that bears testimony to the rich nature of the African continent. In this book, doyennes of the discipline, Pat and Jenny, delve deeper into what it is that sets this relatively new style of quilting apart. Quilt the Beloved Country gives you inspiration aplenty with beautiful photographs and step-by-step instructions on how to make your own African quilt.

This is the kind of book that at first glance, you think is just really pretty to browse.  But it took just a few minutes of browsing before I was sucked in and found several beautiful projects that I might want to try.  I’ve never made an African inspired quilt, but I’ve always found the colors and the design very inspiring when I see them in quilt shows.  This book is no exception.

The 24 page gallery of quilts is simply gorgeous.  Each quilt is accompanied by photos of the people and the animals and the scenery in Africa that inspired that particular project.  Then you move into 14 projects.  The one that caught my attention first is the African Alphabet.  The A through Z appliqué blocks are so colorful with images of animals, plants, and scenes from Africa.  If you’ve been looking for a project that lets you break out of your color habits, this is a great place to play with bright, bold, fabric.  Many of the other projects are appliquéd either by hand or machine and all include bright, happy colors.

There are some more simple quilts, better suited for the beginner.  Many of these simply pieced projects have been embellished by beads or buttons and sometimes yarn.

The last quilt I’ll tell you about is titled Summer Madness.  It’s got a folk art feel to it with a simple bouquet of flowers popping out of what looks like either a clay pot or a woven basket.  The flower design is repeated throughout the border and is interspersed with lots of colorful triangles.  For something different, the authors used the same fabric in both the flowers and the leaves, but they suggest using scraps of fabric for a wildly colorful look.  Personally, I’d use some multicolored batiks to give it that eye popping color.
