Scrap quilts are my favorite! Since many books on scrap quilts inhabit my quilt library, it takes a special one to make me want to add another. Quilts for Scrap Lovers by Judy Gauthier is definitely worthy of special consideration for several reasons.

The section on color theory is succinct and informative – focusing on the basics of color, intensity, and spacing. The author discusses how the contrast of light, medium, and dark can be as much or more important than the actual colors used. I especially liked the illustration of mixing modern fabrics with older ones in ones stash - to update the feel of a quilt while using up favorite prints from the past.

Quilts for Scrap Lovers provides 16 quilt patterns which are attractive, unusual, and accessible to the average quilter. The designs have a modern slant and are scrappy in the truest sense of the word. No coordinated collections are found in this book! All the fabrics are remnants from previous sewing projects cut into 3-1/2”, 4-1/2”, or 5-1/2” squares – the basic unit of construction for each quilt. The author’s creativity shines as she explores different ways to turn the squares into other shapes, sometimes in unexpected ways.

Cutting, layout, and finished size instructions are given for crib, throw, twin, double, queen, and king sizes for each of the 16 projects. The finished sizes are for the quilt top without borders; directions for optional borders are included. I especially like her scrappy versions of chevron and houndstooth designs. The last pattern in the book, called Snippets, shows how to use up small pieces leftover from making scrappy quilt. It’s a winner!
