I own many, if not most, of Alex Anderson's books because they are so consistently creative, instructive, and inspiring. Scrap Quilting with Alex Anderson is another winner with its helpful suggestions for fabric selection, color value placement, and stash development. The book has many examples of lovely scrap quilts by the author, other well-known designers, and from the past.
Even though I love scrap quilts and often adapt patterns to accommodate my various collections of fabrics, I do prefer an element of planned randomness. The author provides helpful hints, including the use of a design wall, to achieve an attractive balance of colors and values for a successful scrap quilt. My two favorite tips are to incorporate a few fabrics with light, medium, and dark values in the same fabric to add sparkle, and to switch the color value placements in the outer blocks to create a subtle border. I am intrigued by an unusual pieced border with inset scrappy curved pieces in the Double Flying Geese pattern - I may have to try that soon! Scrap Quilting with Alex Anderson will be a valuable addition to the library of any quilter who enjoys scrap quilts. Those intimidated by scrap quilts will gain confidence and scrap enthusiasts will be inspired!
