Seems like Scrappy is a new book by Rebecca Silbaugh filled with lovely quilts using precuts and fat quarters. I have made scrappy quilts for years – the more fabrics the better. They are my favorite because, while I do enjoy making them, they also help justify my large fabric stash. I can shop anywhere and find fabric for one of my many collections waiting for a scrappy project. I get excited when I find a book with unusual quilt designs that inspires me to break out a stack of fat quarters and precuts and start playing!
The author provides several attractive scrappy quilt designs. "The Wayfarer" combines the movement of Trip around the World with a Bargello design. "Splotch" uses hexagon-shaped Honeycomb precuts to make a unique quilt with a modern, graphic flair. "Bitsy" is a mini-quilt starting with 5” charms to make a scrappy pieced chevron. "Baskets", which merges a Basket quilt with Burgoyne Surrounded, relies on lots of fabrics in a limited palette for its appeal. "Nova" is a pixel-style quilt using colorful batiks scattered on a neutral background. "Frolic" is a fun combination of wonky Log Cabin and Nine-Patch blocks. There are several other scrappy choices, but the one I want to try first is "Crumpet" with its off-center diamond pattern made of 60° triangles from strips or Honeycomb precuts.
Wondering what do to with your precuts? I recommend Rebecca Silbaugh’s Seems like Scrappy for its creative and inspirational use of precuts.
