As the title suggests, Stitches from the Garden by Kathy Schmitz is a lovely book of hand embroidery inspired by nature. The charming pillow on the cover with a bird and her nest of eggs sets the mood for the projects in the book, which includes a welcome wall hanging, sewing kit, sachet, pin cushion, needle book, magnetic needle holder, tiny tote, journal cover, tea towel set, wrist cuff, and garden journal. My favorites are the New Day pillow on the cover, a stunning Woodlands Table Runner with embroidery around the edges, and the Bloom Bag with stylized flowers in ecru on a dark grey background

The author, Kathy Schmitz, is an artist, fabric designer, and embroidery pattern designer - some of her watercolors and inspiration sketches are interspersed throughout the book. The projects as a whole are appealing due to a consistent palette of hand-dyed, overdyed cotton embroidery floss and antiqued cream-colored backgrounds. She also provides a section on embroidery basics, DMC equivalents for the hand-dyed floss, and instructions for making cording from embroidery thread. I am eager to start a project – probably the Bloom Bag – and am sure others will find inspiration as well.
