I was excited to review The Big Book of Scrappy Quilts because I love scrappy quilts! They appeal to my aesthetic sense, and justify (in my mind) having a large stash of fabrics from which to pull. The more fabrics I use in a quilt and the scrappier it is, the more I enjoy the process and the finished project. This diverse compilation of 77 scrappy quilts - many by well-known designers - is amazing! The quilts vary from traditional to modern, crib-size to king-size, and beginner to advanced. Many are suitable for pre-cuts.
During my first perusal alone, I found 8 quilts I would like to make. Snowy Peaks is a Pyramid quilt with interesting color placement that forms a secondary pattern of large diamonds. Sherbet Punch is a fat quarter friendly quilt done in a striking palette of red, aqua, and cream. Scrappy Nines combines neutral fabrics in an interesting design with Nine-Patch blocks - some horizontal and some on-point. Ohio Star and Courthouse Steps alternates two traditional blocks in a dynamic and very scrappy rendition. Town Square made me think “How did they construct that block?” Past and Present utilizes light and dark contrast to form a secondary pattern with graphic appeal. Days of ’47 features the Salt Lake City block which changes in appearance with different color placements. Very Varied Values, another lesson in color values, has an attractive on-point setting which extends to include the border.
The Big Book of Scrappy Quilts truly has something for every quilter, regardless of skill level. I am eager to add it to my quilt library and recommend it as an ongoing resource for scrappy inspiration.
