My three-year-old has become quite the girly girl recently (at least where fashion is concerned) and absolutely loves dresses; the twirlier the better! When I saw this Urban Prairie Dress pattern with its empire waist and big ruffles, I knew I had to make it for Alice. And what better fabric to use than the delicate prairie-inspired prints of our Sweetgrass Prairie collection?
I chose to make the 4T/5T size, not because the pattern size is off, but because my kiddo is tall. I figure this size will fit her perfectly this summer, so I sewed it with the cap sleeve option. The sweet little girl in the photo is not Alice -- Jenni, our photo stylist found an actual five-year-old to model it for us. Isn't she cute? (Five-year-olds are MUCH more cooperative than three-year-olds for photo shoots! Funny how that works.)
Anyway, the pattern itself was very easy, and I had the dress whipped up in no time. The only thing I added was to finish each inside seam with an overlock stitch because the pattern didn't specify to finish seams. I think this seam overlocking took as long as the rest of the sewing put together, but I think it's worth it to know it's nicely finished inside and won't ravel. In the end, I love how it turned out and I can't wait to see it on Alice once it gets a little warmer outside.
