Lucky me! I get to blog about a really cool book, Block Party - The Modern Quilting Bee by Alissa Haight Carlton & Kristen Lejnieks.
I’m a pretty modern girl with a real attraction to both new and old. To me, this book epitomizes just that. The modern designs and fabrics mixed with the old traditional concept of a quilting bee. Block Party takes you on a quilting bee journey; learning about a variety of traditional blocks and techniques in a fresh and modern way and learning about how an online community of quilters make up a modern day quilting bee. If you’ve ever wanted to make a cool and modern quilt, this book is for you, it’s a great source of inspiration! And if you’ve ever wanted to share your love of quilting with others, this is a great guidebook on how a bee works and how to get a bee started! One of my favorite aspects in learning about the bee is how the designers would send off packets to the other members, giving guidelines (but not word-for-word directions) and letting each bee member use their own creativity. The end result is a fun and unique combination of all involved.
Here’s a sneak peek of some of my favorite quilts featured.

This contest will have two lucky winners! One person will win a copy of this wonderful book and the other person will win a Stack Sampler of one of my favorite new collections, Birchtree Lane. To enter, simply leave us a comment by 11:59 pm on July 4th telling us if you've ever participated in an online quilting bee. We will pick our winners a couple days later.
Following the blog tour? Join Anna Luna of Crafty Girls Workshop tomorrow for another chance to win.
Rules: No purchase necessary. Must have a US mailing address to enter. One entry per person. Must provide a valid email address so that we can contact you if you win.

Jul 3, 2011 at 1:20 PM No, I have never participated in an online quilting bee. It sounds like it would be fun. I have had a quilting bee in my house before.
Great online contest!
Jul 2, 2011 at 3:47 PM What a great new book! I began teaching a quilting class last year to a group of extremely creative women who just happened to not have sat down at a sewing machine before. They have come a long ways this year, yet sometimes their creativity is one jump ahead of their skills so we are always ready to undertake new challenges and sew outside the box. I`ve never been part of a quilting bee, online or otherwise, but what a fun idea! It`d be a great way to keep my students creating between class projects. Perhaps I will encounter one of you in a later online bee. Happy quilting to all!
Jul 2, 2011 at 2:49 PM I have participated in a quilting bee -- it was an interesting experience! Thanks for a chance at the book -- it looks great!

Jun 29, 2011 at 9:11 AM I have never participated in any quilting bees but think it would be fun. I would love this book; I really like that quilt on the grass with the diagonal blocks. Thanks for the chance to win.
Jun 29, 2011 at 9:04 AM I didn't know these bees existed til just now (I need to get out more...lol). Sometimes I sit back and think about how it used to be when ladies gathered to do their handwork on their quilts, their conversations, the chance to get away from the "men folk"...these were the "ties that bind" for these quiltmakers. Thanks for sharing!
Jun 29, 2011 at 8:52 AM Sounds like a great way to learn something new and meet
fellow quilters. Sign me up to be an online quilter.
Jun 29, 2011 at 6:04 AM Looks like lots of fun. I'd love to participate.

Jun 28, 2011 at 3:03 PM I've never participated in a bee before, but I've enjoyed living vicariously through the blogs that post about them :)
Jun 28, 2011 at 2:48 PM I haven't participated in a bee, though participated in two online quiltalongs this year - my first. I don't have a blog so this eliminates a lot of the bees that require posting. Yet, my mother and I will be having a two person bee if we win this book. We would make some of these great quilts together. Thanks for the opportunity. p.s. I love those fabrics too! We enjoy our connecting threads catalogs and orders.
Jun 28, 2011 at 2:27 PM I have never been involved in an online quilting bee, but I was involved with round robins for cross-stitching, and that was alot of fun. I always wanted to belong to a quilting bee, but there are none around me, so online would be the next best thing. I would really like to have this book and find out more.
