Enter to win a Flying Geese x4 Ruler from Lazy Girl Designs!  Wahoo!

I saw this quilt pattern a long time ago in Teri Christopherson’s book, Thoughts of Home and I loved it!  When we decided to pick up the individual pattern, Return of the Swallows (a great stash buster), I had to make it!

Here's a look at the finished Quilt:

I decided to make it a sampler project.  A mirage stack was used in the half square triangle blocks along with a variety of tone-on-tone backgrounds.  A perfect Stack option for half square triangles is the Mirage Jewel Stack

They are a perfect size and color for the half square triangles giving the quilt a “lively” look and perfect for a “fella” gift.  I love the contrast the Mirage fabrics give against the varied, tonal creams and whites.  The flying geese/border/binding were made from Cirlicue Coal and Weybridge Antique.

Once I committed to making the Return of the Swallows quilt, I needed to deal with ALL THOSE FLYING GEESE!  There are 300 of them!  I read the pattern and reflected on the process suggested for making flying geese.  After less than a minute’s pondering I decided to use a different method than offered in the pattern.  (My humblest apologies Teri!)

There is a ruler available for making flying geese that makes the process fast, accurate and with virtually no waste.  Until I used this method my flying geese were always skewed, misshapen and it was so frustrating!  I used the Flying Geese x4 Ruler and it saved me approximately 1-1/2 yards of fabric and loads of time!  Unbelievable!  I will not make flying geese any other way!  With every process you get four finished flying geese!  How awesome is that!  In fact, the experience using this ruler was so wonderful we made a video for you! Check it out here: Flying Geese x 4 No Math Ruler

We will have three lucky winners for the Flying Geese x4 Ruler from Lazy Girl Designs!  For a chance to win, comment below and let us know your preferred method of making flying geese or, your most horrifying experience make those little buggers.  Giveaway ends at midnight PST, on May 29th.  The winners will be selected randomly and announced a couple of days later.

Rules:  No purchase necessary.  Must have a US mailing address.  One entry per person.  Must provide a valid email address so that we can contact winners.

I have not done Flying Geese before because I was afraid of all the geese! The ruler makes them seem less daunting and they sure do look great.
  5. Barbara Setterdahl Says:
I've done Flying Geese with Square in a Square ruler, and the flip corner method. I haven't tried the stacking fabric rectangles- looks too confusing to me. I do love the look of flying geese. :-D

  12. Bonita Says:
I have tried flying geese several times and wasted so much fabric. The ruler will be the most wonderful tool in my sewing room. I would use it a lot. It would allow me to be more creative when designing a quilt pattern.
  13. Nfiegirl Says:
Boy! this is exactly what I need. Presently working on 2 BOM and there must be 100's of flying geese in them. If it would make it easier, then this is what I need..
  14. Emily R. Says:
I tried to make flying geese once and it was a disaster!! I have a project I want to do, but it includes these pesky little blocks, so this ruler would REALLY help me out!!
  15. madeline Says:
I love flying geese, but hate making them. Usually use the 2 squares on the ends of a rectangle. If this ruler makes it easier, I really need one!!!
  16. Julia Says:
I love the look of flying geese, it would be great to have a simple way to make them in all different sizes and have them look good and be exact!
  17. Donna Says:
I have always loved the look of flying geese but have always been afraid to try them. Maybe it is time to give it a whirl.
  18. Sharron Says:
Have only done FG in hand piecing, and that was 30 yrs ago. The video made it look so simple. This ruler will be mine either way. Would not even think of getting it without the video. You showed that this possible to do. Thank you.
  19. Judy Olson Says:
This ruler looks like a must-have. It would make flying geese so much easier!
  20. Joellyn P Says:
I love tools that help me make things faster with no waste of fabric.
  21. Connie D Says:
I have tried many methods but I usually resort to sewing through the diagonal on overlapping corner squares and cutting off the corners (like MaryEllen Hopkins snowball blocks are done). You waste a lot of little triangles of fabric using this method. I would love to try this ruler. I'm hoping it will make the process more accurate.
  22. Laurie Blair Says:
This looks awesome! Have a number of projects on "my list" that will provide ample opportunity to test and perfect. I continue to marvel at how folks are able to figure out cool stuff like this! Gonna' try crossing my fingers and holding my breath to increase my chances of being a lucky winner. ;)
  23. Lisa Marie Says:
I like flying geese and have tried several methods. Most of the time I just paper piece them because they turn out well. Might be nice if I didn't have to fool with the paper though. I have never seen this ruler but it sounds great!
  24. Darleen Moore Says:
Looks like a wonderful tool. I currently struggle with Flying Geese and tend to stay away from quilts using them.
  25. Tammie Says:
What a neat new tool and it would be a great addition to my collection. I love tools that make my life easier and making quilts fast and fun!
  26. Beth Kobliska Says:
I make flying geese using the "now waste" method, where you use 4 small squares for the sky, and 2 larger squares for the geese. You end up with 4 units. But this doesn't always work with scraps, as you need squares for the geese that are larger than most of my scraps, and I can't use many scraps that would be large enough to make a single flying geese (goose?) unit. I'd love to have the ruler to make the job easier and more accurate.
  27. Trina Says:
Oh I love rulers....I have so many and they are so much fun. I hope to win.
  28. Melba Aldridge Says:
My husband said my comment should be: "I make beautiful quilts and would be happy to advertise your ruler as contributing to their beauty"...he's rather biased about my work :) As the others have commented, I too have had successes and disappointments with flying geese, but love to see them in quilts.
  29. Bethany Nelson Says:
The ruler sounds great. Ilike to do stars, therefore it should help with the points.
  30. Nancy Says:
I'd love to make a Christmas quilt for a gift using
flying geese pattern. This ruler would make the project
go quickly. Keeping my fingers crossed to get picked.
  31. Dorothy I. Dishman Says:
Please enter my name in the drawing for the flying geese x4 tool. Anything to save fabric and use a short cut.
    Thanks for the opportunity.

I would love to win this ruler. I have one already, but need one for my travel bag. Thanks to Connecting threads for the giveaway and Joan for the invention:)!!!
  34. Debbie Gallett Says:
I have never made a lot of flying geese. The few I've made were the sew and flip method. I would love this ruler as I dislike wasting fabric.
  35. Trudy Lindemann Says:
I would love to win this ruler. My flying geese are haphazard. Seems like half the time they are 'off' and the point ends up getting cut off when I sew them together!
  36. Diane S. Says:
I've never made flying geese but would like to try. I love easy methods!
  37. Vicki Says:
I've done flying geese different ways, but this ruler seems like it would make it very easy to make them!

I have made a few flying geese units and used the sew and flip method, but would love to have this tool. It would be a time saver. Thanks for an opportunity to win one.
  42. Sharon Says:
Geese scare me! The ruler would certainly go a long way to making the fear go away! Thanks for the chance to win one!
  43. Micheline Says:
This ruler would make flying geese alot easier and with less waste. would love to win this tool. thank for the chance...
  44. April Says:
The one time I tried flying geese, they didn't look very good. I'm sure a ruler would help, and I do have plans to broaden my horizons in my quilting. I suppose learning to make FG is a good place to start.
  45. Barb Schneider Says:
I've made paper pieced flying geese, and used the method of starting with a rectangle, adding squares to each end. Both create a lot of wasted fabric. This ruler would be wonderful!
  46. Beth B Says:
Not sure that I have a favorite way to make FG since they don't always turn out well. Would love to try this ruler. It makes the progress look painless.
  47. Annette Says:
We all need a little more flying geese in our lives!!! Tool looks great would love to give it a try.
  48. Jess Says:
Yeah, I've pretty much avoided them all together as mine are always wonky and don't look good! I decided they were my nemesis, when I was working on a BOM that was very skimpy on the fabric. I runied so much trying to do the geese, & I had no room for mistakes, so I gave up on the BOM altogether and just put the remaining fabric in my stash.
  49. Donn E. Williams Says:
Flying Geese and I are NOT friends. I'd love to try out this ruler as it actually sounds like fun.
  50. Donna Sykes Says:
Mari, what a wonderful quilt!! Stunning. I have never done flying geese but would love to try, especially if I could win this ruler. Sounds like a great and useful tool to have.
