Bright, Cheery, Simple, Fast, Fat Quarter Friendly, Quilt-as-you-go, all describe my Gifty Galore project, Fresh Blooms Placemats, from Gudrun Erla’s Book, Fast & Furious Family.
Armed with a stack of Rivera II FQs and backing, I was able to comaplete four 14” x 18-1/2” cheery plcemats within a weekend. By-the-way, there are still many beautiful Rivera II fabrics to choose from when making your placemats. It is a very popular collection!
I used the stabilizer, Craf-Tex (Bosal 327F), recommended in the pattern. I found it to work well. The stabilizer made the placemats stiffer than regular batting, which I liked. I was concerned that the Craf-Tex would be floppy after it was washed, but found that the placemat came out a little softer, and it actually held its shape better than batting.
I did find a slight discrepancy with the required yardage of the Craf-Tex stabilizer. The pattern calls for 1 yd (21” wide), but to get 4 placemats, you need 2 yards total.
I am pleased with my placemats and I already have ideas of changing the appliqué and fabrics to make placemats for other seasons.

Jul 30, 2012 at 9:51 PM Oh WOW!!! I have that book and I sure hope to get a chance to do that gifty. I also have an abundance of FQs to choose from. I hope to find the Craf-Tex to use. Does CT have it?
