There's a baby boom happening in my extended family, so I can never have enough fast and fun baby things to sew. When I saw these adorable booties from Anna Maria Horner's new book, Handmade Beginnings, I knew I had to make them.
Lately I love the combination of aqua and red, so I used a solid and a print from our Canning Day collection to make these. The peaches print is my personal favorite, and when I saw the big button on the booties in the pattern, I just knew it would make the cutest fabric covered buttons.
The pattern I found to be quick and fairly easy--it took me about 4 hours to sew these booties. The only tricky part was easing around the curves sewing the sole to the sides--if you go slowly it's just fine though. The pattern also just has you fuse the sole lining to the inside, but I think I will do a hand slip stitch to secure it even more, knowing how much baby stuff gets washed. From the perspective of a mom with a little one, these booties look like they are super easy to get on the wee one's foot, and they look like they will stay on. Cute and functional!

This time I am ahead of the game with no particular baby to gift them to. I am going to tuck them away until I need them at the last minute. (Isn't it funny how something as long as a 9 month pregnancy can just 'sneak up on you' when you sew hand made gifts?)
