The finalists for our Fabric Design Contest have submitted their secondary designs, so while we get them ready to be judged, we thought we would share the designs with you and a little bit about the designer...
Meet Jessica Majers, designer of "Barnum & Johnny, the Jackalope Brothers."
I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a kid, I was always drawing or making something. My mom had a rule that I could watch as much PBS as I wanted as long as I was drawing. Thus my love of art (not to mention TV) flourished. When I was ten my family moved to a tiny, remote town in Northwest Montana. The culture shock of moving to such a small, wild place was overwhelming. Drawing and making things played a hug epart in my being able to adjust to such a big change. At age twenty I moved to San Francisco, CA, where I attended the California College of the Arts for industrial design. I love designing and making useful things, so the pragmatism and creativity of industrial design was a perfect fit.
My love of fabric design began after I graduated from college. It all started when my mom made me a couple of beautiful quilts. After years of studying how to design for mass production, I loved the handmade, one-off quality of quilts. As I started learning to piece, I realized that one of my favorite elements of the process is the fabric. I love the different patterns and levels of contrast and how these factors combine to create a beautiful quilt. So, I decided to try to design my own fabric. Barnum and Johnny, The Jackalope Brothers was inspired by my love of the western frontier and its colorful history.
