National Organizational Month: Shoe Hanger to Project Storage

This week's tip is a great one. Everyone seems to have an old plastic shoe hanger laying around. Shoe hangers are one of those household products that always seem like a good idea at the time, but then when you get home and try it out, it proves to be more trouble than it's worth. Especially if you buy the cheapest kind that has the clear plastic on the front. The good news is: if you are one of the people who have tried and failed to make your shoe hanger work, there's an alternative use for it that works so well for organizing your quilt projects!
Tip: Use a shoe hanger to store all of the different pieces for your WIPs.
Once I read this tip, I immediately ran to my closet and dusted off the shoe hanger that I had just collecting dust on the shelf. If you don't already have one, you can buy one at almost any department store for between $5-10 dollars. If you do have to buy one, I suggest that you look for the shoe hangers that have the clear plastic fronts so that you can see the contents of each pocket.
This is SUCH a great way to keep all of the pieces of your project together in one neat and tidy space. I placed the quilt top, threads, binding and pattern all in their own pockets, and by storing each project's pieces on the same row, I am able to keep track of everything I have.
We liked this project so much that we are now using it in our office's sewing space too!
Feb 13, 2013 at 10:09 PM These can be found at garage and estate sales for just a few bucks! I've used one for a couple of years for my ribbons, trims, etc. I also have a small one (like one for jewelry or travel)that I use for my Christmas threads. Great organizational tool!

Jan 31, 2013 at 8:44 AM I have a small one with clear plastic pockets on both sides. It is made for jewelry, but I use it for my varigated threads. It works great! Love this idea for all my scraps and tools!
Jan 31, 2013 at 6:45 AM I have had one for a while. I found one that had tiers of separate pockets running sidewise across the bag and use it for rolls of stabelizers and other things on a roll.
Jan 31, 2013 at 2:58 AM I love this idea. I have been looking for a way to store my scraps by color as I enjoy making scrap quilts. This will solve that problem. Same goes for my WIP. I had no clever way of storing them. THANKS>
Jan 31, 2013 at 12:07 AM I've been using one for all my various rolls of embroidery stabilizers, and in the bathroom for toiletries. Great ideas everyone! I'll be getting a few more now. I'm sure my handy hubby can devise a way to hang them on the closet rod for me.
Jan 30, 2013 at 5:52 PM In regards to needing a wall to hang up the shoe storage/quilting storage, I hung the hooks on mine over the back of the door. Hides it as well as helping store my stash.

Jan 30, 2013 at 3:50 PM Also I found the plastic Gift Bag Holders are ideal for holding your rulers. I simply any it on the door of my quilting space. Get space because it is two sided and takes up very little space. I found it at the Container store, cheap!

pull the scraps.
