Patchwork Pumpkin Table Runner: Work in Progress

Judy was inspired to make a Patchwork Pumpkin Table Runner for a holiday gift. Ann was inspired by Judy’s idea to make one also. So, here we are blogging together about the same fun project!
Fabric Selection
Both of us chose autumnal batiks from the current batik collection and our stash.
Preparing the Patchwork
Five rows of five 2½” batik squares are sewn together to make the pumpkins.
Appliquéing the Pumpkins, Leaves, and Stems
Judy printed the design on Quilter's Freezer Paper Sheets, cut out the pumpkin, leaf, and stem shapes, adhered
them to the backs of the fabrics with a hot iron, and cut out the pieces leaving a ¼” seam allowance. She turned under the edges and appliquéd the pieces by machine with coordinating thread and a small blanket stitch.

Ann chose to trace the designs on Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 sheets. The pumpkin shape was cut from the fusible web, on both sides of the line, before ironing the Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 to the fabric. This "window" method, described in the Fusible Edge Appliqué tutorial, was used so only the edge of the pumpkin would have adhesive behind it. The stems and leaves were cut out after the fusible web was adhered.
The pumpkin, leaves, and stem will be appliquéd with either a satin stitch, blanket stitch, or blind hem stitch around the raw edges by machine. The curlicue vine design was traced onto Fabri-Solvy to be embroidered after the appliqué work is done.
Want to learn more about these methods? They are discussed in detail in our appliqué tutorials.
Work in Progress
We are excited to see how lovely the Patchwork Pumpkin Table Runners are when completed. Both of us plan to finish them in the next few days, so please check back to see our progress!
