I’ve always wanted to make a cute little clutch so I thought this was a great opportunity to make the Pleated Purse-Frame Purse from A Bag for All Reasons by Liam Lam. I went with the alternate size and made it 2” taller.
The fabric sewing and cutting was super easy, but getting that clutch frame on was a bit tricky. There were a couple other bumps that I ran into, but looking back, they could have been avoided.
First I had to order the clutch frame on-line. The pattern called for a 6 x 3 frame and the one’s I ended up getting were 6 ¾”. So to make up for the slight size difference, I halved the pleats (since I forgot to cut the pattern slightly bigger in that direction). The frame also didn’t have the grooves down the side like the one in the pattern. If I had thought 2 steps ahead, I would have sewn more along the sides to get more of a finished edge. As you can see in the picture below, I have some touching up to do to get rid of those raw edges.
Second, getting that frame on was, as I mentioned, a little bit of a chore. It’s hard to not get glue everywhere. I think the glue that I used wasn’t the best. After doing more research on the best glue to use, I found that everyone is saying that Gutermann is the glue of choice (she even mentions that under supplies but I somehow missed that ?). You can only get the glue on-line and I of course waited until the last minute to complete this project so it was too late to order some. ? In addition to the poor glue choice, I don’t think I waited long enough for it to dry and be tacky (like the instructions suggest) so it was a bit more oozy when trying to put the fabric in the frame (again, that could have been glue choice as well). She gave an option to use some cotton piping, which I ended up needing to use.
In spite of the mishaps (that I always encounter because I’m a procrastinator ?), I enjoyed this project. I have since ordered the better glue on-line and am going to be making several for Christmas presents. ?
