Shhh! Don’t tell anyone, but I have a bit of a problem-- I can’t go anywhere near flannel without reaching out and stroking it. And our flannel is especially nice to touch! So when Big Sky Lodge arrived I started thinking about which quilt I wanted to make. Snapshots was an easy choice: it uses plaid in the borders, and is blue (two more things I’m partial to). I also loved that it showcases the animal print just beautifully.
Since the animal print is fussy cut (and I can be incredibly fussy) I went to the trouble of cutting a 6 ½ “ square out of a file folder to use as a frame so I could pick exactly how I wanted the animals to appear in the block. I know you can just use a 6 ½” square ruler but I find all the lines too distracting. Once lined up I could put my ruler in place, lift away the folder, and cut.
Flannel is always a little challenging because of its tendency to stretch and there are several directional prints to pay attention to, but I found the quilt went together quite nicely. It’s always good to try something new and I’d never done a quilt where part of the design extends out into the borders. I was very pleased with how well things lined up.
This quilt has broad appeal. It’s a nice size, guys would like it, animal lovers would like it, people who love the color blue would like it, and, most especially, flannel lovers (like me) will LOVE it!
