Have you noticed how much fabric is packed into our Clearance section lately? With the Solid & Mirage closeout colors, it's over 200 fabrics! I think I throw some clearance fabric into every order I place because it's just so useful, and such a good deal! I thought I'd make a list of my favorite top uses of clearance fabric (not that you need any enabling when the price is that low).
#1. Quilt Backings
OK, so this one is kind of obvious, but it's so true. I usually pick up about 2-3 yards of fabrics for backings in the colors I use the most because I sew lots of baby and small lap quilts. Large bed-sized quilts take 4-10 yards of fabric for backings, so that savings really adds up!
Don't you think those bright solids and prints would make great pillowcases for kids? A couple years ago, a group of Connecting Threads quilters made 88 pillowcases in one evening to donate to the local children's hospital. There are lots of charities who love to get pillowcases, so you can do an online search to find one local to you. Our Magic Pillowcases pattern is fast, fun, and has no raw edges left at the end. There are also lots of free pillowcase patterns out there.
#3. Quilt Storage Bags
Quilts should be stored in breathable cotton bags, so why not make some? You could use the pillowcase pattern above as a storage bag, or make a basic sack with a drawstring at the top.
#4. Table Cloths
Table cloths use up a lot of fabric and take a lot of punishment, so cheap fabric is perfect. You could make a couple for outdoor picnic tables and summer BBQs and not have to buy those plastic ones that just end up in the landfill. We even have a FREE table cloth pattern that is customizable to the size of your table.
Similar to table cloths, curtains take a lot of yardage. We have a cute FREE cafe curtain pattern. Curtains aren't just for the kitchen though. Homemade puppet theater? Cover for under the bathroom sink? Curtained closet cover? Curtains can cover anything unsightly in a cute and affordable way.
OK, I've shared mine. What do you like to use clearance fabric for?
