Vancouver, WA. Cartoon bears, foxes, rabbits, and all of their furry woodland friends hike, canoe and camp across the focal in Connecting Threads newest fabric collection, Forest Fun, drawn by in-house designer, Melissa Burt.
A Northern California native, Melissa’s cast of characters and the woodland themed supporting prints were inspired by her own camping trips in the Northwest as a kid and by requests for an outdoorsy collection from her aunt and cousins after she designed Connecting Thread’s first kids group, Backyard Fun. Melissa feels that the supporting prints for Forest Fun are even stronger than her work on the bug themed Backyard Fun because they can be combined to create a beautiful, mature quilt for adult outdoors lovers in addition to working well with the more whimsical focal and secondary prints.
Melissa has worked at Connecting Threads for 3 ½ years as Art Director, and has been designing reproduction fabrics for Connecting Threads’ signature fabric collections for 3 years. Melissa has a Masters degree in English Literature from the University of Alaska Fairbanks but always had a strong interest in graphic design. Looking back, Melissa laughs, “Growing up I always wanted to design wrapping paper. Designing fabric is even better because I still get to work on the same scale and with the same repeats, but now my designs end up in family heirlooms instead of the trash.”
