All Things Quilting by Alex Anderson is a compilation of the information from Start Quilting with Alex Anderson (in its 3rd edition) and her numerous smaller books on specific quilting related subjects. The author’s expertise - acquired during her long career as a quilt and fabric designer, prolific writer, teacher, and host of TV and web-based quilting shows - shows through in this comprehensive book. She presents tried and true techniques along with expanded and updated methods and tools. The book is thorough but accessible, with clear succinct text, extensive step-by-step photos, and helpful tips balanced by adequate negative space to make easy, pleasurable reading.

The author provides sections on: the anatomy of a quilt, setting up a sewing room, fabric and color selection, drafting, rotary cutting, various piecing techniques, appliqué methods, settings, borders, choosing quilting designs, preparing to quilt, hand and machine quilting, binding, and adding a hanging sleeve and a label. I especially appreciated the instructions for invisible machine appliqué. Keeping the book by my machine, I was able to follow the steps and specific suggestions to successfully appliqué thick yarn dyed appliqué pieces with nylon monofilament thread. There are excellent instructions for hand quilting – more than usually offered in a general quilting instruction book. I eagerly welcome All Things Quilting as a useful quilting reference for my quilt library and would recommend it as an all-in-on resource for quilters of all levels.
