A quick check of my quilting library reveals over a dozen color theory quilting books – including the 1st Edition of Color Play by Joen Wolfrom. If I had to recommend only one book as a reference for understanding and utilizing color theory for quilters, this updated and expanded edition of Color Play would definitely be it! I was amazed when I read the first edition years ago, but this version has over one hundred new quilts to illustrate color concepts and delves further into my favorite aspects of color theory: the use of color value and contrast to portray transparency, luminosity, and depth. Each concept is illustrated throughout the book with photos from nature and quilts from around the world.

There are six chapters which build upon each other to explore the use of color in quilts. Chapter 1 discusses the history of color theory, the Ives color wheel, and the four main color scales: pure, tints, shades, and tones. Chapter 2 covers the five color plans found most often in nature: monochromatic, complementary, analogous, split-complementary, and triadic. Most important for quilters, not only does the author explain and illustrate the color plans, she also provides guidelines on how to use them. Chapter 3 explains color value and how color is relative when it comes to values. Chapter 4 delves into individual colors and their role in nature and quilts.

All the basics from the previous chapters come together in Chapter 5 - twenty-four color wheel colors are examined in detail with drawings and fabric samples of the various color scales and plans for each color. This unique, expansive chapter is the most useful and comprehensive exploration of individual colors and their partners for quilters I have seen. Chapter 6 provides the quilter with knowledge to use fabric colors to create the illusion of depth, luminosity, luster, shadows, highlights, transparency, reflections, and other landscape effects. Oh my! These are the concepts that to me make outstanding quilts!
