I fell in love with Japanese taupes and wovens the very first time I saw them and have been drawn to books featuring them ever since. I love the softness of the prints and the texture of the wovens. Add in small projects done in the distinctive Japanese patchwork style and I find them irresistible.

Housewarming Patchwork is a collection of blocks made using small scraps of fabric that come together into projects that are mini works of art. The Village Table Pocket uses three of the blocks put together to form a little scene that I would frame and hang on the wall.

My favorite project in this book is the Beetle Pouch. While beetles are often sold in stores as pets in Japan, I’m not a bug or beetle loving person. But Yoko Saito’s choice of fabrics present such a striking image that I was immediately drawn to it and want to make one for myself.

Not for the faint of heart, many of these blocks have Y-seam construction, but the distinctive look of the finished product makes the extra effort worthwhile.

I was fortunate to pick up a small pack of wovens on one of my visits to Japan, but haven’t been able to bring myself to actually use them. In Housewarming Patchwork I think I’ve found some projects that will tempt me to finally cut into them.
