For Kaffe Fassett’s Heritage Quilts, he chose fifteen historic quilts from the Quilter’s Museum and Gallery in New York City, covering 300 years of quilting, and reenvisioned them in his colorful palette, fabric collections, and personal interpretation of their layouts. Five members of his design team chose one of Kaffe’s quilts to recolor. The result is a glorious collection of photos of antique quilts and 20 colorful designs and patterns for their reincarnations.

Both the old and new quilts are amazing! They vary in style, complexity, and color palettes. Most are very scrappy which makes them well-suited to the wide range of Rowan fabrics. Some of the new design layouts are different – many of the heirloom masterpieces are simplified for today’s busy quilter. But the original essence of the style and the spirit of creativity in each old quilt is maintained and celebrated in the updated version. My favorite is the Sunshine Herringbone Stripes quilt based on the Chevron Strippy Quilt from 1880-1990. Both versions combine a huge number of small strips of fabrics to form secondary patterns. The original densely pieced quilt is made in a primitive, organic way; Kaffe’s version is more structured, easier to accomplish, and still graphically appealing.
