Can anything else original be written about the Log Cabin block? After reading Log Cabin Fever, a new book from popular author Evelyn Sloppy, the answer is a resounding yes! She utilizes this traditional block in a variety of ways to create an amazing array of stunning quilts.
The first way the author explores the design possibilities of the Log Cabin block is to incorporate all or part of the block into other traditional blocks such as the Bear Claw, Delectable Mountain, and heart and basket-shaped blocks. Love Entangled demonstrates a second technique; Log Cabin blocks are used to create an unusual setting with a dramatic secondary pattern. The third way is to form inner and outer borders with interlocking Log Cabin blocks. My favorite quilt, a Basket of Logs, cleverly combines these elements into a lovely, scrappy quilt that is traditional but unusual.
I would highly recommend adding this well-written and well-illustrated book to a quilter's library! For confident beginners, the Log Cabin block is an excellent way to master accurate piecing. More experienced quilters will also be inspired make one or more of these quilts to be treasured for years!
