The large number of quilt books written about the Log Cabin block over the years reflects its historical significance, popularity, versatility, and variability. Log Cabin Restructured, written by Shizuko Kuroha, stands out as an amazing compilation of unusual projects using variations of the Log Cabin block. Many factors make this book exceptional. The Asian inspiration of the book is enhanced by the beautiful Japanese fabrics showcased in the quilted projects – although other fabrics would also work well. Well-illustrated general instructions are provided for sewing supplies, fabric selection, drafting blocks, hand-piecing, machine-piecing, paper-piecing, and adding binding. Each section provides patterns and tutorials on piecing specific shapes of Log Cabins. The 23 quilt projects vary in size and complexity, including some miniature piecing.

The Basic Log Cabin Blocks section discusses Traditional Log Cabin, Courthouse Steps, and Double-Sided Log Cabin blocks. The Geometric Log Cabin Blocks section provides construction techniques and patterns for triangle, diamond, hexagon, and curved variations. The Unique Log Cabin Blocks section reinterprets the Log Cabin block by deconstructing it, adding fabric in the seams, changing strip width ratios, and unusual color placement. There are even landscape and Log Cabin-framed boutis examples! I am eager to add Log Cabin Restructured to my quilting library and these techniques to my quilting repertoire.
