I get excited when I find an unusual quilt book with an intriguing theme and unique quilts. Quilt Lab: the Creative Side of Science by Alexandra Winston has 12 quilted projects and quilts that are each based on a mathematical or scientific principle. Don’t let this scare you off! While I use a lot of basic math in designing quilts, I only have a vague recollection of geometry, calculus, binary code, scatter plots, states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas), cultures in petri dishes, and sound waves. I am not sure I ever knew what a fractal is – but it sure makes a cute pillow!

The author, a math teacher and quilter, does a good job of providing simplified explanations in the Study Hall sections; you really don’t need to understand the concepts to make the fun projects. This book provides inspiration to please those with special interests. If you or someone in your life is interested in math or science, this book is for you! The quilt representing sound waves would be a perfect gift for a musician. My absolute favorite, a wall hanging with a series of camera apertures gradually increasing in opening size, would appeal to anyone who likes photography. Even if none of these apply, the designs all have an attractive, strong graphic quality and modern vibe with a broad appeal. I am eager to show the projects in this book to my children, who both excel in math (they didn’t get it from me!) and add it to my quilt library.
