Create a quilt museum in your own home with the patterns in this book. Join Eleanor Burns as she shares her passion for antique quilts. Along with Eleanor's love of antique quilts is her passion to simplify those beautiful vintage patterns of the past. She teaches us methods to recreate traditional quilt patterns such as Dresden Plate, Goose in the Pond, Fans, Crow's Nest and more. The best part is Eleanor's clever techniques. Her instructions, along with step by step illustrations, make these treasured patterns available to today's busy quilters as full size quilts and combine the collection into one sampler. In addition to the patterns, Eleanor shares vintage quilts from her own collection, offering fabric selection advice, lovely sample quilts, history, and yardage and cutting charts. As always, you can count on Eleanor Burns to give an entertaining look at quilting.

Quilts from El’s Attic by Eleanor Burns is a treasure trove of vintage patterns perfect for reproduction fabrics from the 1930s and 1940s – or the real thing if you are lucky enough to own them. The historical aspect of the book appeals to me; the patterns are ones used by quilters of that era. Quilts from El’s Attic often includes information about the quilt block or quilt designer as well as a photo of the original quilt or quilt pattern from which book’s pattern was derived. For those interested in variety, instructions are given for a sampler quilt combining several blocks from different quilts. Also, the Student Gallery section shows some updated versions with contemporary fabrics – even batiks!

Among the fourteen lovely, well-illustrated patterns, I was particularly drawn to the classic design of the Vintage Dresden Plate Quilt. The author’s company, Quilt in a Day, received a stack of feed sack fabrics cut into the template shapes; she had her staff complete the quilt fifty years later. The wedges of the Dresden plate are all curved except one in each quadrant that is pointed. The curved wedges are repeated in the pieced, scalloped border. The table runner version may be one of my next projects. Time to pull out my stash of 1930s reproductions and start playing!
