Sneaky Piecing by Beth Ferrier is loaded with quilting tips, tricks and techniques helpful for beginning and experienced quilters. This well-written and well-illustrated book covers a wide range of topics crucial to successful piecing and quilting, including hints for cutting, stitching, pressing, finishing, and more. Ms. Ferrier shares her ideas, "tools in a quilting toolbox" and "creative systems to organize little processes". She acknowledges there are often different ways of doing things in quilting, stating "The right way gives us the outcome we want."

The author, a "recovering perfectionist", spiced up her writing with pithy quotes. "Don't sacrifice good on the altar of perfect" refers to damaging fabric trying to rip out imperfect piecing more than twice. When discussing the importance of using light, medium, and dark color values, she states "A quilt of all medium is neither rare nor well done."

Even as an experienced quilter who has read a lot of quilt books, I came away with many useful hints for improving efficiency and accuracy. Especially helpful were her instructions for Square-in-Square blocks, four Flying Geese variations, setting triangles, an easy way to hang quilts, and pressing techniques to facilitate quilting designs. Six projects, including four larger quilts and two smaller ones for tables, provide practice applying her tips, tricks, and techniques. Although the author and I differ on some points, there were many suggestions that will change the way I do certain aspects of piecing and writing quilt patterns. I would recommend this book as a valuable resource for a quilter's library, regardless of experience level.
