The New Hexagon by Katja Marek provides patterns for 52 hexagons pieced with English Paper Piecing (EPP). What a variety! It is amazing how many different ways a hexagon can be divided to get shapes within the hexagon shape. Detailed instructions are given for making your own EPP paper pieces. Alternately, a resource is given for purchasing a set of precut paper pieces to make one of each block. For those new to EPP, the well-illustrated instructions will enable a successful start. For those hand sewers experienced with the traditional hand-basting of each piece, the author shows her alternate method which she considers easier and faster.

Each of the 52 blocks has a color image with fabrics and a full-size pattern in solid colors for a 3” hexagon (the measurement of one side) that can be enlarged or reduced. As an avid fussy cutter, I loved the fussy cut designs swirling around in many blocks! Also included in the book are patterns for quilts of various sizes, mug rugs, candle mats, and table toppers to show ways the blocks can be assembled into quilted projects. I can’t wait to start my hexagon quilt using neutral fabrics - which will rely more on color value contrast than color contrast to highlight the block designs. If you have had an urge to try EPP and/or embark upon a pieced hexagon project, this book is for you! English Paper-Piecing (EPP) is a relaxing way to spend time while listening to an audio book, watching TV, waiting for appointments, and traveling in the car.
